Where Do We Sing From?

When I ask singers, "where do you sing from?" I typically get 2 answers: The heart, and the diaphragm.

Both answers are right, but they're only partially correct.

Dots Thoughts on Amy Winehouse

Powerful vs. Empowered Singing

Part of why I take an emphasis on empowerment as a vocal coach is because of the short-lived careers of many artists who fall so quickly after they rise, or never even make it to the top, because they suffer the consequences of making choices that permanently damage the mind, soul and body.

To help you maximize YOUR VOICE as a gift of expression with clarity, good health, abundance and longevity, I've written an article on POWERFUL vs. EMPOWERED SINGING.

Amy Winehouse was another example of how an incredible voice and all the talent in the world alone does not guarantee personal fulfillment and self-empowerment... A powerful reminder of how important your Mind, Soul and VOICE are.

It's a tough world out there, and empowered singing can help!

How to prepare for the audition
How to practice for the audition
How to create a story and feeling for your performance
How to take others on a journey with you, while you sing

PRE-AUDITION CHECKLIST
Have I met the requirements of the request? Example: 16 measures, 32 measures, etc., know if you need sheet music or accompanist, a cappella, etc.
Prepare at least 2 contrasting back up songs, just in case they ask you to sing something else.
If you're required to bring sheet music, tape it together and have it marked so an accompanist can easily play it.

Integrative Vocal Tip

It's already almost through the first month of the New Year! How are
you doing with your resolutions? Just know that you have a whole
year to achieve them, and every day is the beginning of a new year.
Don't be too hard on yourselves. The way we treat ourselves
throughout our day has a direct impact on how we sing
! We
can take a look at how we conduct each day as we move towards
achieving our goals and resolutions. The following exercise will help
you feel empowered, so you're not just focused on "WHAT" to do in
a day, but "HOW" you do it. Remember, you get to choose this
experience, and it's the underlying feeling of your experience when
you sing, that people will feel.
Keep this in mind when you watch
shows like American Idol. You can learn a lot by watching the vocal
journey of others. This week, notice how the contestants treat themselves.
